Candil Terms of Use
Effective date: [EFFECTIVE DATE]
Version: [VERSION]
The Portuguese version of these Terms is the reference text. If the versions differ, the Portuguese version applies, unless the law of your country requires otherwise.
1. Who we are and acceptance
Candil is offered by [COMPANY LEGAL NAME], a Brazilian company with CNPJ [CNPJ] and its registered office at [ADDRESS] ("Candil", "we", "us").
These Terms govern your use of the app, the website, and the Candil WhatsApp channel. When you create an account or use Candil, you accept these Terms and confirm that you have read the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use Candil.
2. What Candil does
Candil is a Bible reading companion. Depending on your region and app version, it offers:
- Bible reading and search;
- AI answers grounded in Bible passages;
- verse checking;
- a prayer journal with reminders;
- verse images to share;
- in some regions, a WhatsApp channel.
The language model never writes Bible text. It picks references from passages found, and the app shows the stored text of each verse. Even so, the choice of passages and any AI-written explanations can contain errors. Read the Bible text in context. For questions of faith, talk to your church or a leader you trust.
Candil does not replace church, pastoral care, or personal study.
3. Not medical, psychological, or emergency care
Candil does not provide medical, psychological, psychiatric, or emergency care. Nothing in the app is a diagnosis or a treatment.
The app checks searches and questions for signs of risk and shows help contacts. This check can fail. It does not follow up with you and it does not call anyone.
If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number now, such as 911 in the US. In the US you can also call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
4. Account
- You sign in with Apple, Google, or an email code. Candil uses no passwords. Where available, you connect WhatsApp from a signed-in account.
- Your account is personal. Do not share it.
- Keep access to your email, your device, and your Apple, Google, or WhatsApp accounts secure.
- You must be at least 13, or 16 in the European Union (or the lower age set by the member state), to use Candil without the consent of a parent or legal guardian. Below that age, a parent or guardian must consent and supervise use.
- You can delete your account at any time in the app. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through a store.
5. Acceptable use
You must not:
- use Candil for anything illegal or to harm other people;
- send content that insults, threatens, harasses, or discriminates;
- send data about other people without the right to do so;
- try to access other people's accounts, systems, or data;
- get around limits, the risk check, or other safeguards;
- copy, scrape, or resell the service or its answers by automated means;
- use Candil to build or train another AI service;
- present altered text as Bible text verified by Candil;
- send spam or bulk messages through the WhatsApp channel.
The WhatsApp channel serves only the Candil service. It is not a general AI chat.
6. Subscription
6.1 Plans and free trial
Some features need a subscription. Plans, prices, and features appear in the app before you buy. [PLANS AND PRICES]
A subscription may start with a 7-day free trial. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the store charges you for the first period. Each person can get one trial per store, under the store's rules. [CONFIRM: first-period discount, if any.]
6.2 Auto-renewal
The subscription is sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The store charges your store account. The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, for the same length and at the current price, until you cancel. On the App Store, cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid renewal.
If the price changes, the store tells you first, under its own rules.
6.3 How to cancel
- iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose Candil, and tap Cancel Subscription.
- Android: open Google Play, tap your profile picture, tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, choose Candil, and tap Cancel subscription.
Uninstalling the app or deleting your account does not cancel the subscription. After you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period already paid.
6.4 Refunds
Payments go to Apple or Google, and refunds follow each store's rules.
- App Store: ask at https://reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Google Play: ask through Google Play help or your account's order history.
In Brazil, you can withdraw from the purchase within 7 days under art. 49 of the Consumer Protection Code. If the store does not grant the request, contact us through section 15 and we will help. [CONFIRM the procedure.] In the European Union and other countries, you keep the rights your local law gives you.
7. Bible texts
Candil uses Bible translations with an open license or in the public domain. Today they are:
- Bíblia Livre (BLIVRE), under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. "Todas as Escrituras em português citadas são da Bíblia Livre (BLIVRE), Copyright © Diego Santos, Mario Sérgio, e Marco Teles, http://sites.google.com/site/biblialivre/ - fevereiro de 2018. Licença Creative Commons Atribuição 4.0 Brasil (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/br/)." The text is shown without its footnotes.
- Berean Standard Bible (BSB), dedicated to the public domain. "The Holy Bible, Berean Standard Bible, BSB is produced in cooperation with Bible Hub, Discovery Bible, OpenBible.com, and the Berean Bible Translation Committee. This text of God's Word has been dedicated to the public domain."
The app shows the current list of translations and the credits for each. We do not change the words of any verse. Your use of these texts outside Candil follows each translation's license, not these Terms.
8. Your content
What you write stays yours. This includes your journal, questions, and messages.
You give us a limited permission to process this content only to provide the service to you, such as answering a question or saving a message to your account. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, except for what the law requires us to keep. We do not use your content for advertising or to train AI models.
Today the journal stays only on your device. If you lose your device without exporting, the journal is lost and we cannot recover it.
You are responsible for what you send, including any data about other people you mention.
9. Intellectual property
The app, the Candil brand, the design, the illustrations, and the code belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app on your devices, under these Terms and the store rules.
You may share the verse images made in the app for personal, non-commercial use, without changing the Bible text or removing the seal or the credit.
10. Third-party services
Candil depends on third-party services such as Apple, Google, and WhatsApp. These services have their own terms. We do not control their availability.
11. Availability and changes to the service
We work to keep Candil available, but it may stop for maintenance, failures, or reasons outside our control. We may change, add, or remove features. If we remove an essential feature of a paid subscription, we will tell you first and, where appropriate, offer a remedy such as a pro rata refund.
12. Liability
Nothing in these Terms limits the rights that the Brazilian Consumer Protection Code or other mandatory laws give you.
We are liable for harm we cause, as the law provides. We are not liable for:
- harm caused solely by you or by third parties, such as losing your device or sharing your account;
- failures of third-party services we did not contract for you, such as your mobile carrier or your app store;
- acts of God or force majeure;
- decisions you make without regard to the notice in section 3.
Outside Brazil, our liability follows the applicable law, to the extent that law allows.
13. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or close an account that breaches these Terms seriously or repeatedly, or when the law requires it. Where possible, we will tell you first and explain why. You can close your account at any time in the app.
14. Governing law and venue
These Terms are governed by Brazilian law. If you are a consumer in Brazil, you may bring a claim in the courts of your own domicile (Consumer Protection Code, art. 101, I). In other cases, the courts of [VENUE] have jurisdiction, unless a legal rule says otherwise. If you live in another country, you keep the mandatory protections of your country's law.
15. Contact
Email: [CONTACT EMAIL]
Address: [ADDRESS]
16. Changes to these Terms
We may change these Terms. When a change is material, we will tell you in the app at least [NOTICE PERIOD] days before it takes effect. If you do not agree, you can cancel your subscription and delete your account. If you keep using Candil after the effective date, the new version applies to you.
17. App Store terms
If you downloaded Candil from the App Store, these Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no duty to maintain or support the app. If the app fails to meet an applicable warranty, you may tell Apple, and Apple may refund the price paid. To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation. We, not Apple, are responsible for claims about the app, including third-party intellectual property claims. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you. [CONFIRM with the lawyer against Apple's current minimum terms.]
